What Is Keyword Difficulty?
Keyword Difficulty (KD) is a score — typically from 0 to 100 — that measures how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a specific keyword. The higher the score, the more difficult it is to rank.
Most keyword research tools calculate difficulty based on:
- The domain authority (DA) and page authority (PA) of the pages currently ranking in the top 10
- The number and quality of backlinks those pages have
- The quality of the content currently ranking
Keyword Difficulty Scale
| KD Score | Difficulty | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 0–20 | Very Easy | Brand new websites, niche blogs |
| 21–35 | Easy | New to intermediate websites |
| 36–50 | Medium | Sites with some domain authority (DA 20+) |
| 51–70 | Hard | Established sites with strong backlink profiles |
| 71–100 | Very Hard | High-authority domains with significant SEO budgets |
What Keyword Difficulty Should You Target?
Your target KD range depends on your website's current authority:
- New website (DA 0–20) — Target KD 0–25. Focus on long-tail keywords and niche topics.
- Growing website (DA 20–40) — Target KD 20–45. Start competing for broader terms.
- Established website (DA 40–60) — Target KD 30–60. Mix of competitive and mid-difficulty terms.
- Authority website (DA 60+) — Can target KD 50–80+ with the right content and link-building strategy.
How to Find Low Difficulty Keywords
- Use the Keyword Difficulty Checker to test specific keywords.
- Use the Long Tail Keyword Generator — long-tail keywords almost always have lower KD.
- Target question-based keywords (How to, What is, Why does) — these often have lower competition than head terms.
- Look for keywords where the top results are forums, Reddit threads, or low-authority blogs — these are easier to outrank.
Keyword Difficulty vs. Search Volume
The ideal keyword is one with decent search volume AND low difficulty. This intersection is called the "keyword sweet spot." In practice:
- High volume + high difficulty = Hard to rank; needs authority and links
- High volume + low difficulty = Rare gems — target these immediately
- Low volume + low difficulty = Easy wins; good for topical authority
- Low volume + high difficulty = Avoid — not worth the effort
